China's newly unveiled zero-tariff treatment for the 53 African countries that have established diplomatic relations with Beijing marks a historic move in China-Africa cooperation, as well as in the history of international relations, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said on Wednesday.

Lin's remarks came after reports that African governments and media echoed rave reviews about the move, which will come into effect on May 1.

He said at a news conference that the zero-tariff measure is a major step in China's proactive and unilateral opening-up, demonstrating the country's willingness to assume more international obligations and firmly advance high-level opening-up.

"At a time when global protectionism and unilateralism are on the rise, and spillover effects from the Middle East situation impact neighboring continents, China is sharing opportunities and pursuing common development with Africa through zero tariffs," Lin said. "This highlights the determination of China and Africa to contribute to global peace and development through stability."

The measure will allow more high-quality African products to enter Chinese households, enhancing the sense of fulfillment and happiness among people on both sides, Lin said, adding that it is also expected to support Chinese enterprises in "going global" to Africa, providing more investment and industrial upgrading opportunities to African countries and strengthening Africa's capacity for independent development.

Looking ahead, Lin said China will continue to work with relevant African countries to negotiate and sign economic partnership agreements on common development. Efforts will also be made to upgrade the "green channel" for African agricultural products exported to China, he added.

"China stands ready to work with the African side to continuously enrich the zero-tariff treatment, making it a powerful engine for high-quality China-Africa cooperation and a new model of solidarity and collaboration within the Global South," Lin stressed.
