GUIYANG -- The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge in Southwest China's Guizhou province has been certified by Guinness World Records (GWR) as the world's highest bridge, with a confirmed height of 626.01 meters.

After repeated measurements and verification, the result announced Tuesday marks a new global record for bridge height, overtaking the 565.4-meter-high Beipanjiang Bridge, which straddles Guizhou and neighboring Yunnan provinces and was certified by GWR in 2018.

"The final confirmed height of the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge is 626.01 meters, surpassing the previous world record of 565.4 meters. The challenge has been successful," said Luo Qiong, an official adjudicator with GWR, at the certification ceremony.

Located in the mountainous terrain of southwest China, the steel-truss suspension bridge is a key project on the Liuzhi-Anlong Expressway in Guizhou. It opened to traffic on Sept 28, 2025.

Before receiving Guinness certification, the bridge had already attracted considerable industry attention for both its main span and its height, with some bridge specialists describing it as a record-setting project in both horizontal and vertical dimensions.

The bridge has also been developed as a tourism attraction. Since opening, its sightseeing elevators, high-altitude bungee jumping facilities and water-curtain light shows have attracted large numbers of visitors during major holidays, including last year's National Day holiday and this year's Spring Festival holiday.

The height data used for the Guinness certification were supported by Chinese surveying and mapping technologies. The domestically developed BeiDou positioning equipment used in the process had previously supported Chinese mountaineers during an ascent of Mount Qomolangma, the world's highest peak.

A representative of Guizhou Communications Investment Group Co., Ltd., the bridge's builder, said the certification represents international recognition of China's engineering and surveying capabilities.
