China's National Meteorological Center on Tuesday renewed a blue alert for severe convective weather and a yellow alert for heavy rain, warning of strong winds and intense downpours across large parts of the country's south.

The center issued the alerts at 6 am, forecasting hazardous conditions from 8 am Tuesday to 8 am Wednesday.

Parts of southern and southwestern China are expected to experience severe convective weather, including thunderstorms accompanied by gale-force winds and hail, the center said.

Wind speeds are forecast to exceed 62 kilometers per hour in some areas, with parts of eastern and southern Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region expected to see winds above 89 km/h.

Short-term but intense rainfall is also expected, with hourly precipitation exceeding 20 millimeters in parts of southwestern regions. In some areas, including Guangxi and Guangdong province, rainfall intensity could surpass 50 millimeters per hour.

Meanwhile, the center maintained a yellow alert for heavy rain, indicating a higher risk of flooding and related disasters.

From Tuesday morning to Wednesday morning, heavy to torrential rain is forecast in parts of central Chongqing, eastern Yunnan province, southern areas along the Huaihe River, regions south of the Yangtze River, and parts of southern China.

Particularly intense rainfall, ranging from 100 to 130 millimeters, is expected in parts of Anhui province, Jiangxi province, Guangxi and Guangdong, the center said.

Many of the affected areas are also likely to experience strong convective activity, including short bursts of heavy rain, thunderstorms, high winds and possible hail.

Meteorological authorities warned that the combination of severe storms and heavy rainfall could increase the risk of flash floods, landslides and urban waterlogging, especially in mountainous and low-lying regions.

Local governments have been urged to remain on alert and take precautions to mitigate potential impacts, while the public is advised to monitor weather updates ahead of the May Day holiday.
