AU backs China-Pakistan peace push amid rising Gulf tensions

The African Union has welcomed the five-point peace initiative jointly proposed by China and Pakistan to help de-escalate the worsening crisis in the Gulf and Middle East, describing it as "a timely diplomatic intervention" as the conflict continues to send shockwaves through global energy markets, maritime trade routes and food supply chains, with African economies among those increasingly exposed to the fallout.

In a statement issued on Friday, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said the initiative represents a "timely and constructive contribution" to ongoing international efforts aimed at easing tensions and advancing a political and diplomatic solution to the crisis.

The China-Pakistan five-point initiative, announced on March 31 after talks in Beijing between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar, calls for an immediate ceasefire, the start of peace talks, the protection of civilians and non-military infrastructure, and the restoration of safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

Youssouf said these measures, alongside respect for international humanitarian law and maritime security, are critical to containing the current escalation.

He expressed deep concern over the continued deterioration of the security situation in the region, warning that the consequences are already being felt well beyond the Middle East.

The AU chairperson called for restraint, urgent de-escalation and sustained diplomatic engagement, stressing that all parties must act in accordance with international law and the United Nations Charter to safeguard international peace and security.

He underscored that a durable resolution can only be achieved through dialogue and negotiated solutions.

"The African Union remains ready to work with international and regional partners in support of efforts aimed at de-escalation and the promotion of peace and stability in the region," the statement said.

The AU's endorsement of the China-Pakistan initiative comes as international concern mounts over the wider global implications of the conflict, particularly its impact on shipping lanes, energy markets and food supply chains that are vital to developing economies.
