Remote mountaintop broadcast station job sparks online debate
A job vacancy at a transmission station at an altitude of over 3,600 meters in Liangshan Yi autonomous prefecture, Sichuan province, recently sparked heated discussions online due to its extreme isolation.
The position, which involves equipment maintenance and 24-hour monitoring of programming, is offered by the Mufoshan Radio and Television Transmission Station.
The station sits at an elevation of 3,614 meters on a mountaintop in Zhaojue county, with no residents within a 10-kilometer radius, according to the recent job posting.
The unusual working conditions have drawn mixed reactions online. Many netizens regard it as a paradise for introverts, as it offers a salary and basic amenities while being free from social pressure and intense workplace competition.
However, others express concerns about the physical challenges of working at high altitudes and the psychological toll of prolonged isolation, as well as safety issues in such a remote place.
Chen Mengke, director of the station, told Sichuan Daily that the facility operates in harsh conditions, with icy weather for about six months each year, while frequent thunderstorms and strong winds dominate the rest. It currently has 14 staff members.
"Despite the challenges, the station plays a vital role in ensuring broadcasting coverage for nearly 1 million people in the surrounding mountain area," he said.
Chen said the position has already attracted many inquiries. He suggests that eligible candidates carefully consider the job requirements and working environment before making a rational decision.
