An aging, overburdened grid plagued by frequent breakdowns has led to rotational power cuts, known locally as "load-shedding", lasting up to 12 hours daily. The economic toll is staggering; the South African Reserve Bank estimates the daily cost at nearly 899 million rand ($49 million). This energy deficit stifles business productivity, disrupts households, and fuels soaring electricity costs, which have seen average annual increases of 11 percent over the past decade — more than double the inflation rate.
