In Zhang Wu Zhi (The Superfluous Things), a quintessential book about ancient scholars' lifestyle aesthetics, Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) author Wen Zhenheng elaborated, in 12 volumes, the design details of residential gardens, as well as how to arrange floral pots, plant trees, and cultivate birds, fish and goldfish at home — all elements of a cultivated existence. From the Humble Administrator's Garden to Superfluous Things, an ongoing exhibition at Suzhou Museum, Jiangsu province, visualizes the aspects of a perfect lifestyle pursued by the well-educated and well-to-do members as mentioned in Wen's book. The paintings and antiques on show will usher one into the material and spiritual worlds of scholars in ancient times — how they harmonized their living spaces with nature and the changing moods of the four seasons. The exhibition will end on Oct 26.
