China launched its first Type 076 amphibious assault ship, the CNS Sichuan, on Friday in Shanghai.

Named after the southwestern province, the vessel is the first of a new generation of amphibious assault ship. It can be regarded as "a small aircraft carrier", as it can launch fighter jets by means electromagnetic catapults. Planes can also land on the deck of the ship as it is also equipped with arrestor technology.

Type 076 is China's largest combat ship. Its displacement of nearly 40,000 tons allows for greater weapons capacity and extends its operational range, enhancing its combat effectiveness. Meanwhile, the two-island superstructure configuration enhances the comprehensive combat capability and command efficiency. For example, the two islands can respectively deal with ship navigation and flight operations at the same time. The two-island separation reduces interference between communication and radar systems and can allow for continued command functions if one island is damaged in combat..

The design of the vessel means it has strong overall combat capabilities, and it has the capability to conduct amphibious assault operations, which includes both surface landings and airborne operations, such as helicopter and parachute assaults.

The CNS Sichuan marks another step forward for the People's Liberation Army's combat abilities and therefore its comprehensive capability to safeguard the nation's territorial integrity and maritime interests.
