Indian professor: Population change not a game between China and India

A United Nations population report this year showed that India may have overtaken China to become the world's most populated country. However, India's growing workforce doesn't necessarily mean a decrease in China's growth trajectories, said Swaran Singh, a professor of international relations at the Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, India. Demographic change should be considered from an objective perspective, he added.

Singh said that three aspects are worth mentioning here. First, demographic change is a gradual and inevitable process, so surprise at the change is uncalled for. Second, technological development can make up for the labor shortage arising out of a slowdown in population growth. Third, given that China and India wield considerable influence in Asia and the world, the two countries should maintain practical cooperation and make contributions to regional and global development. Therefore the impact of the demographic change should not be misinterpreted.
