Wang Chao, president of the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs, has been appointed the spokesman for the first session of the 14th National People's Congress.

Wang, who was born in 1960, is a native of Hebei province. He began his career in 1982, and has worked for long in the field of foreign trade and economic cooperation.

He served as the assistant commerce minister in 2006 and became the vice-minister of commerce in 2010. He served as the vice-foreign minister in 2013 and became the president of the CPIFA in July 2019.

The CPIFA was founded in December 1949 at the initiative of then premier Zhou Enlai. It is the first institute devoted to people-to-people diplomacy.
Wang is the ninth NPC spokesperson since the first news conference of the top legislature was held at the first session of the 6th NPC in June 1983.
