China needs to strive steadfastly to achieve its goals, which is the best way to counteract the US' policy on containing China, said Xu Wenhong, a scholar from Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

The US has been creating troubles in order to deviate China from its development track, from interfering China's domestic affairs to stirring its neighboring situation, said Xu, deputy general-secretary of Belt and Road Initiative Research Center under the academy.

Xu said that the US and Europe have experienced multiple economic and social challenges after the year of 2000, while China has unleashed and developed productive forces, made remarkable achievements after the reform and opening-up.

That China has stepped up efforts in safeguarding its marine rights is justified and reasonable.

However, some US politicians insist China's improved governance on territorial sovereignty poses a threat to US hegemony. It's clear that the US label China as its main rival, and will take more steps to check China's rise.

In stark contrast to the Western hegemony theories, China has a long history in seeking coexistence with difference. China will seek peaceful coexistence with other big countries, but it will never compromise on its core interests, Xu said.

Xu made the remarks at the seminar on US Indo-Pacific strategy on regional security on Oct 27. The seminar was held by China Daily Op-Ed department and China Daily website.
