As Taliban forces entered Kabul on Monday, US forces left their embassy in a scene reminiscent of the way they had left Saigon, Vietnam, in 1975.

The similarity doesn't end there. Both entities were heavily dependent on US forces for survival and collapsed the moment the United States withdrew its troops. Similarly, the US had propped up the Kuomintang in China, supplying them with arms, dollars and even navy transportation in the 1940s. They, too, ultimately crumbled.

The US intervenes in other countries' civil wars, cloaking its intentions behind the beautiful garb of "democracy" and pushes them to hold elections. However, the regimes collapse the moment the US pulls out, which goes to prove that Western-style democracy does not work everywhere.

Besides, the US always sides with the corrupt regimes. In the 1940s, the Kuomintang leaders grabbed so much of US assistance that then US President Harry Truman said, "They're all thieves, every damn one of them", and accused them of investing the money in realty in New York. The US-backed regime in Saigon was no less when it came to corruption.

As is apparent from these cases, when the US forces leave, they leave their "friends" behind. That should serve as a lesson to the US, to not impose its will upon others, and to politicians in countries with civil conflicts, to never seek foreign intervention.

Unlike its counterparts in Saigon and Kabul, the Kuomintang fled to Taiwan where they remain subservient to the US. In fact, the ruling Democratic Progressive Party is outdoing the Kuomintang at kowtowing to US politicians.

Taiwan as part of China is not comparable with the independent country Afghanistan, and there are no US troops there. However, the local media in Taiwan has warned the DPP and its leader Tsai Ing-wen that US politicians could abandon Taipei, too, spelling their doom.

There will be no hope for the DPP unless it gives up efforts towards "Taiwan independence". China must be and will be reunified, and the day will ultimately come.
