LONDON - 39-year-old Roger Federer and 34-year-old Novak Djokovic both marched into the men's singles quarterfinals at Wimbledon on Monday.

Federer traded blows with his 26-year-old opponent Lorenzo Sonego of Italy in their first 10 games, before the roof of Centre Court was closed due to rain. The seasoned Swiss then broke serve in the 11th game right after play resumed.

The 20-time Grand Slam winner had everything under control after winning the first set 7-5, reaching the quarterfinals at Wimbledon for the 18th time by taking the following two sets 6-4, 6-2.

Djokovic, aiming for his 20th Grand Slam title, was equally formidable. He saw off 25-year-old Cristian Garin 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 in less than two hours. The Serbian has only lost one set in his first four matches at Wimbledon this year.

"I am happy particularly with the match today," said Djokovic. "After the third round, it was kind of up and down for me. Today was a very solid performance from the first to last point. I was mentally present. I was serving much better, using the court well."

Djokovic will face unseeded Marton Fucsovics, after the 29-year-old Hungarian edged Russia's fifth seed Andrey Rublev in five sets.

Federer will play the winner between second seed Daniil Medvedev of Russia and 14th seed Hubert Hurkacz from Poland on Tuesday, as their last 16 match was suspended due to rain in the fourth set.

In the women's singles, local hopeful Emma Raducanu retired while trailing Australia's Ajla Tomljanovic 4-6 and 0-3.

The 18-year-old wildcard, whose mother is Chinese, won three matches in a row in her first Grand Slam and forced a tight encounter with 28-year-old Tomljanovic in the first set. Raducanu was clearly suffering the beginning of the second set as she kept touching her stomach and her face became pale.

After assessment by medical staff, the umpire announced that Raducanu would not continue.

Tomljanovic will now face her compatriot Ashleigh Barty, as the world number one defeated French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic 7-5, 6-3.

Former Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber of Germany beat American teenager Coco Gauff 6-4, 6-4.
