Changting was also the city where Xiamen University was relocated during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45). Doctor Pen Tung Sah, a young and energetic professor of electrical engineering, was appointed as president in a situation of crisis. He transferred Xiamen instruction, faculty and students in a safe area, away from direct assault from war. His resourcefulness and profound commitment to education carried very high the motto of Xiamen University, "strive for excellence". He was an exemplary and inspiring hero.
