Trains to fight poverty by promoting products

Trains promoting local tourism and agricultural products will run through 52 poverty-stricken counties in seven provinces and regions in China's south and northwest in September and October. Along different train routes, which have yet to be determined, there will be 10 livestreaming events, with artists and hosts introducing local agricultural products and tourist attractions. Artists from the China Oriental Performing Group, the China National Traditional Orchestra, the China National Symphony Orchestra and hosts from the China Media Group will join the effort as volunteers.

Two fugitives returned to China from Spain

Two fugitives on Interpol's Red Notice list were returned to China from Spain on Sunday with the assistance of the Chinese embassy in Spain and the Spanish police. One of the fugitives, surnamed Qiu, is suspected of embezzlement. The Ministry of Public Security said in a statement issued on Monday that Qiu took advantage of his position and worked with others to change the beneficiary of a client's insurance policy. After applying to terminate the policy, Qiu allegedly transferred the refund to his private account and fled to Spain in April 2012. The other fugitive, a fraud suspect surnamed Qi, allegedly defrauded victims of money by repeatedly mortgaging fictitious assets. The ministry said Qi fled to Spain in August 2014.

Ex-liquor maker exec gets 11-year sentence

Liu Zili, former vice-chairman of leading Chinese liquor maker Kweichow Moutai Group, was sentenced to 11 years and six months in prison on Monday for taking bribes and also fined 1 million yuan ($144,600), a court in Guizhou province said. His illegal gains, worth about 18.5 million yuan, were also confiscated, the Qiannan Intermediate People's Court said. From 2008 to 2018, Liu took advantage of his positions to seek profits for others and accepted bribes from others directly or through his wife or daughter, the court said in its verdict.
