Vice-mayor of Shanghai under investigation

Gong Dao'an, vice-mayor of Shanghai and director of the municipal public security bureau, has been under disciplinary and supervisory investigation by the Communist Party of China Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Supervisory Commission for suspected severe violations of disciplines and laws, an official statement said on Tuesday. The 56-year-old, who was born in Lixian, Hunan province, worked in the public security system in Hubei province and the Ministry of Public Security before coming to Shanghai in 2017.

Food giant COFCO exec being probed by CPC

Luo Jiamang, general accountant of China's biggest food trader COFCO, has been put under investigation for suspected severe violations of disciplines and laws, an official statement said on Tuesday. The investigation into Luo, also a member of the leading Party members' group of the company, is being carried out by the Communist Party of China Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Supervisory Commission.

Ministry's campaign to focus on food waste

China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism will launch a campaign to curb the waste of food, an official with the ministry said. The ministry is formulating and revising guidelines for the hospitality industry and tourist attractions to include provisions against wasting food, according to the official. The ministry called for efforts to guide scenic spots, hotels and restaurants, among others, to fulfill their social responsibilities, strengthen self-discipline and advocate civilized tourism. Various activities will be carried out to ramp up publicity and awareness of the traditional virtue of thrift among the people, the official said.

Man cleared in death: Compensation too low

Wu Chunhong, a villager from Henan province who had his name cleared in April after evidence related to his intentional homicide conviction was deemed insufficient, has reapplied for state compensation, arguing that the amount he received was too low. Wu, 50, applied to the Supreme People's Court, China's top court, last week for reconsideration of the state compensation he received on Aug 6.Wu Chunhong had been awarded about 2.62 million ($377,000) in compensation by the Henan High People's Court, which included 1.9 million yuan for his wrongful detention and 680,000 yuan for his mental anguish. On April 1, more than 15 years after Wu Chunhong was wrongly convicted, the high court in Henan found him not guilty in the death of a 3-year-old boy who died from food poisoning in 2004, overturning the original verdict that sentenced him to life in prison because the chain of evidence in the case was incomplete and did not support his conviction.

Ferry services halted as typhoon approaches

Hainan province has ordered the suspension of all ferry services in the Qiongzhou Strait starting on Tuesday evening as a typhoon approaches. The ferry services across the Qiongzhou Strait were to be halted at 7 pm on Tuesday, and train services in and out of the tropical island were also suspended, the Hainan maritime safety administration said on Tuesday. Typhoon Higos, the seventh typhoon of the year, was about 530 kilometers east of the city of Wuchuan, Guangdong province, at 2 pm on Tuesday. It is expected to make landfall on the west coast of Guangdong on Wednesday. The typhoon was forecast to bring heavy rains to the provinces of Hainan, Guangdong and Yunnan as well as the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, according to the Central Meteorological Station.
