The European Commission has adopted a risk mitigation approach to address security concerns involved in fifth-generation wireless technology, and it did not demand an outright or unilateral ban on Chinese telecom gear-maker Huawei in the 5G network rollout across the bloc.

The EU called for member states to coordinate and implement a package of measures in 5G guidelines it announced last October and has endorsed on Wednesday.

The European Commission said it wanted countries to rely on multiple suppliers of telecom gear to build 5G networks, and to keep questionable providers out of "critical and sensitive" parts of their networks. But it did not demand a pan-EU ban on Huawei.

Huawei said it welcomes the EU's decision to allow it to continue participating in EU 5G rollout efforts. Such a fact-based, unbiased approach to safeguarding 5G security will help the EU deploy the super-fast wireless technology in a safer and faster fashion.
