LEKIMA, the fiercest typhoon that China has seen this year, has been battering the eastern coastal provinces Jiangsu and Zhejiang, as well as Shanghai. Thepaper.cn comments:

In Yongjia city, Zhejiang province alone, the number of victims had risen to 22 by Sunday morning. Across the province, the death toll was 28, while 4 million people were affected and 867,000 people have been evacuated from their homes.

A video clip widely shared on social media showed a reporter in Shanghai standing alone on the Bund, which is normally thronged with people.

Lekima is a rather powerful typhoon and its destructive force should not be underestimated. Especially as the typhoon has a deceptive face. In some regions affected by it, the weather is still good, but residents should be aware that the good weather could take a turn for the worse within a few minutes. Even in those areas where the typhoon has weakened, people should still remain alert.

The typhoon is being closely monitored by the weather stations in Shanghai, Ningbo, and neighboring Jiangsu province, which have been jointly analyzing data on the typhoon since Thursday afternoon according to a data-sharing system that was launched in May.

And researchers from the Shanghai Typhoon Institute, affiliated to the China Meteorological Administration, launched a big weather balloon amid heavy storms to monitor the actual storm conditions.

Meanwhile, via the official micro blog of the Ministry of Emergency Management firefighting bureau, it is known that firefighters have rescued or evacuated 3,169 residents that were in difficulties.

The local police of Taizhou city, Zhejiang province, battled their way up a mountain to provide aid and relief goods to a village that was in the center of the typhoon's path.

Further, the whole of society has been mobilized, as people remind each other to be cautious and help each other if necessary. That's the right way to deal with such typhoons-stay united while mobilizing professionals to do their jobs.
