Kindergarten students stabbed; 14 injured
All of the children who were stabbed during a knife attack in Chongqing on Friday morning have been receiving medical treatment and have no life-threatening injuries, according to a local government statement.
Seven have minor wounds, six were severely injured and one is in critical condition.
Fourteen children suffered injuries when a woman attacked them with a kitchen knife at around 9:30 am at the gate of a kindergarten in Chongqing's Banan district.
The children were being led by teachers on the way back to classrooms after morning exercise outside of the kindergarten gate. A woman, 39, surnamed Liu, suddenly rushed at them and attacked them with a knife. School security and staff members managed to overpower her.
Local police immediately arrived at the scene and rushed the injured children to hospital. The local government has gathered the top medical resources to assist the injured children.
The suspect and related people have been taken into custody for further investigation.
Founded in 1998, Banan New Century Kindergarten is a private school for the general public, according to Banan district education commission. It hosts six classes with 180 students. Now it has 175 students on campus with 17 teachers and staff as well as two security guards.
To prevent such incidents, the Chongqing government has ordered local schools to take stricter measures in campus security.
